Philip retired in 2002 and his only daughter Joanna
(he also has three sons) purchased and took over the company. Although not originally in Joanna’s plans to work for the family business, it was kind of in the blood! Going with her Dad to John Lee Sacks as a little girl, and joining him on odd trips out to see customers during school holidays. Then in the early days of M & B Sacks Limited, quick, convenient (and cheap!) labour came in the form of family. Helping in the warehouse, counting and working bags, and driving the forklift were all good training for the future. After leaving school and finishing college, Joanna pursued her own interests which veered more towards the creative side of things. Uninspired by the company she was working for, in 1990 she joined M & B Sacks Limited just to lend a hand covering for maternity leave in the office (Kate Lamyman), and also a vacant spot for a sales rep.
As time passed, her role started to encompass more and more of the day-to-day running of the business, and in 1997 she became a Director. The opportunity arose for Philip to retire, and rather than let the business go to other interested parties, Joanna decided to purchase the business herself, and keep it in the family.
