How It All Started...

Founder of M & B Sacks Limited, Philip Midgley, was born in Burley in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, before moving to Cleethorpes with the family butchers business and attending Clee Grammar School for Boys. He excelled at all sports, especially football, playing for Grimsby boys and then onto Leeds United under Bill Shankley. He then joined the police force where happily he would be able to pursue his love for sports, but unfortunately found the rest of the job was not going to be for him!

That’s when he found himself in 1960, half an hour after handing in his resignation with the police, on the doorstep of John Lee Sacks in Grantham, asking for a job. When asked what exactly his skills were, he replied that he worked hard, liked people and thought he would be able to sell. He was given a trial for a week using his own car, and excelled, enjoying every minute. Six years later he was made Sales Director.

In 1981, with four children to support, and not a doubt that he could build and run a successful business, M & B Sacks Limited was born. His wife Linda (Company Secretary) found the premises, the Old Mill (an old Dutch barn) in Foston, where we still are today. Thankfully we now have a few additions and modernisations from the original caravan that was used as a makeshift office at the back of the building! The basic principles however, remain the same – good products, top customer service with a friendly down-to-earth approach, and most of all to enjoy what you do. Which he certainly did for a career lasting over 40 years.

Where We Are Now...

Philip retired in 2002 and his only daughter Joanna (he also has three sons) purchased and took over the company. Although not originally in Joanna’s plans to work for the family business, it was kind of in the blood! Going with her Dad to John Lee Sacks as a little girl, and joining him on odd trips out to see customers during school holidays. Then in the early days of M & B Sacks Limited, quick, convenient (and cheap!) labour came in the form of family. Helping in the warehouse, counting and working bags, and driving the forklift were all good training for the future. After leaving school and finishing college, Joanna pursued her own interests which veered more towards the creative side of things. Uninspired by the company she was working for, in 1990 she joined M & B Sacks Limited just to lend a hand covering for maternity leave in the office (Kate Lamyman), and also a vacant spot for a sales rep.

As time passed, her role started to encompass more and more of the day-to-day running of the business, and in 1997 she became a Director. The opportunity arose for Philip to retire, and rather than let the business go to other interested parties, Joanna decided to purchase the business herself, and keep it in the family.

This takes us to where we are now, with our dedicated team, providing new products and ideas, servicing customers large and small, all based on providing the kind of service we would wish to receive ourselves.

Meet The Team

Kate Lamyman and group
Kate Lamyman joined the sack and bag industry from leaving college, starting at John Lee’s in 1978, working for the formidable Charles Dowling. From here she made the move to the malting trade at Pauls Malt Limited, in Grantham. Primarily secretarial and administration, liaising with the breweries etc, but also assisting with the barley buying and various other roles within the site.

Prior to having a family and needing to reduce her hours, she again worked for Philip at M & B Sacks Limited in a part time capacity, who made the move from Lee’s himself in the early 80s forming M & B Sacks Limited.

During the time looking after a young family she gained knowledge in various local businesses whilst working in a self-employed capacity for an underfloor heating company and a waste/recycling company to fit in with her family life but returning to the fold full time in 2008 to M & B Sacks Limited, now owned by Joanna, Philip’s daughter.
She has recently been made a Director, rewarding her knowledge and dedication to M & B Sacks.

Susan Exton is the newest member of the team after returning back to her hometown of Grantham last year following a number of years living and working in Cardiff for a 1st class county cricket club. Previously she worked for another local family run business for 24 years who are a major supplier to the animal and pet food industry.

We also have our boys in the warehouse who say they are far too busy to be photographed, but are an essential part of the operation, with many years’ experience and product knowledge.
